I called Jo to meet her at her place, but she was already in town running errands. We agreed to meet up at the bakery, which was probably foolish, but there weren’t a lot of places to go in town. When I swung open the door, I saw her already waiting at a table for me. I hauled her up out of her seat and pulled her into my arms.

“You have to help me.”

She laughed, squeezing me back. “It might help if I knew what I needed to help you with.”

“Her father…you wouldn’t believe him.”

She extracted herself from my grip and stared me in the eyes. “Whose father? What are you talking about?”

“That woman…the one that invited me over for Sunday lunch?”

“Okay?”

“They got me drunk and I somehow ended up proposing to Elle.”

“Wait, whose Elle?”

“Eleonóra. She’s this super sexy woman that has seven sisters, which is why none of them knew who I was when I was hitting on them.”

She blew out a harsh breath and motioned for me to sit. “Maybe we should take this from the top.”

I explained everything that had happened up until this point. She didn’t say much, but she definitely looked shocked by all that had happened in just a little over a week.

“So, then today I went to her house and instead of ending things for good, I ended up inside with her, and then doing bad things with her.”

“Bad things? Are you twelve?”

“No, but I’m definitely a little emotionally stunted.”

“Jake, don’t you see what’s happening here?”

“Yes, her father is taking over my life, shoving me around, and telling me how I’m going to live it!”

“No, what’s happening here is you’re getting a fiancé.”

“Yeah, one I don’t want.”

Cocking her head to the side, she grinned at me. “Are you sure about that?”

“Why would you even ask that? Of course I’m sure.”

She shifted in her seat, as if getting ready to have some deep, meaningful conversation. “Let’s take a closer look at this. You met this woman back in November—”

“Nope, that wasn’t her.”

“But you thought it was her. And you were so intrigued that you raced out of here when we were having coffee, just so you could find out more about her.”

“Okay,” I said slowly, unsure of where this was going.

“Something attracted you to her.” She picked up her coffee and took a drink, wiping the lid as she set it down. She was wearing lipstick today, but she never wore lipstick. I narrowed my eyes at her, but she quickly averted her gaze, so I got back on track.

“What I’m hearing is that I’m dating the wrong sister.”

“That’s not at all what I’m saying. They all look alike, and based on how drunk you were, you’re going off a memory of the way she looked. The attraction came first. And because you were so attracted to her, you kept chasing her, despite being attacked multiple times.”

“How is this an argument for me being with her? It sounds to me like stupidity.”

“That’s on you,” she answered matter-of-factly.
